The Village Board of Trustees approved an ordinance creating the Riverdale Tree Commission in 2002 .The Commission is composed of volunteer residents and an arborist, who participate in community-wide efforts to publicize the value and benefits of trees . For more than a decade, the National Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the Village of Riverdale, Illinois as a ‘Tree City USA’ Community, honoring the commitment of the village to provide a comprehensive community forestry program. Urban forests cool the air, protect the soil, provide shade and much need habitat for woodland animals, and help to improve air quality in urban areas .
As a partner in support of CSI, the Riverdale Tree Commission aims to enhance the biodiversity of the Calumet region by maintaining the landscape, providing maintenance, planting trees, and working to preserve open space. The Tree Commission helps CSI reach its goals of raising environmental awareness in the Calumet region through the continued dedication to beatifying the Village of Riverdale.
