Shirley Heinze Land Trust (SHLT) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that has been protecting natural land in Northwest Indiana since 1981. Its holdings cover the entire spectrum of natural communities in this region and include several properties which have been dedicated to the people of Indiana as state nature preserves. SHLT works closely with other public and private land protection organizations to maximize the benefit to local biodiversity. It is a leading force in regional planning efforts to promote land conservation and improve the quality of life for local residents. SHLT has three main focus areas, which involve preservation, restoration, and education.
CSI has been integral to the planning and promoting of SHLT events. As our organization has multiple focuses, we have a large number of public events each year ranging from monthly volunteer workdays, seasonal guided hikes, educational workshops and volunteer monitoring projects to our annual Spring Benefit. Being able to promote our monthly volunteer workdays thru CSI has had a large influence on the turnout at our events, held at various preserves thru out Northwest Indiana. Our educational workshops and guided hikes draw participants from across state lines and our annual Spring Benefit hosts over 300 participants annually.
CSI is a highly important partner of SHLT and we provide a high level of assistance to carryout various aspects of CSI’s mission. Our employees serve as co-chairs on both the stewardship team and education team.
