With a mission to provide “an in-depth exploration of the dynamic relationship between people and their environments using the natural and cultural resources of the Indiana Dunes Region where nature and society co-exist,” Dunes Learning Center is devoted to providing curriculum-based environmental education programs for students as well as continuing education opportunities for educators and adults. Founded in 1998 as an independent non-profit organization in partnership with the National Park Service at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Dunes Learning Center has served over 64,000 individuals from hundreds of schools over the last 14 years, with 5,000 students and adults participating annually.
As a CSI partner organization, Dunes Learning Center benefits from the advocacy, marketing and program enhancement efforts of organizations that share our commitment to environmental education. We are able to leverage the shared knowledge and resources of the group to extend our reach and impact in a variety of ways.
Stewardship activities and events like our annual Get Outdoors Day Picnic provide opportunities for the general public to participate, while programs like ParKids, Mighty Acorns, DuneSCOPES and Frog in the Bog provide immersive experiences that help students create a personal relationship with nature through experiential learning — fostering scientific and ecological literacy, promoting stewardship, developing awareness of the importance of National Parks, nurturing a sense of community and actively cultivating the next generation of conservation leaders.
