The bi-state Calumet Ecological Park Association (CEPA) was founded in 1993 to establish an ecological park connecting the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on the east with the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor on the west.
The National Park Service recognized the importance of the Calumet’s natural lands and its industrial areas in its 1998 study on the feasibility of a National Heritage Area. CEPA’s mission is to preserve and enhance a variety of natural, cultural, and historical areas in the Calumet region for present and future generations. CEPA has been a member of the Calumet Stewardship Initiative from the begining.
CEPA invites volunteers to restoration events and tours at Eggers Grove Forest Preserve and the Burnham Greenway, at Park #499 (aka Beans Park) East 106th Street and Avenue D, Chicago. See events in the CSI Calendar or call John Pastirik at (773) 991-0613 or Judy at (773) 646-4773 for more information.
