The Calumet Summit 2013: Connecting for Action took place May 14th to 15th at the newly renovated Marquette Park Pavillion in Gary Indiana. Over 200 participants ─ representing environmental and non-profit organizations, government, educators, and community groups ─ came together to (1) connect with others engaged in environmental planning, conservation, or allied quality of life initiatives, (2) learn about existing studies, plans, and projects that inform or might lead to collaborative action, and (3) identify key priorities, next steps, partners, and resources for advancing their shared goals in the bi-state Calumet region.
Planning and production of Calumet Summit 2013 was coordinated by the Calumet Stewardship Initiative. Stanhope Consulting facilitated discussion and visioning for both days. Calumet Summit 2013 would not have been possible without the support of the sponsors: Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, ArcelorMittal, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, One Region, the Legacy Foundation, Chicago Park District, NIPSCO, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, and The Field Museum.
Below you will find links to documentation of both days’ proceedings and considerations of next steps. Initially these include the agenda, presentation slide shows and notes from table discussions (grouped together by topic), links to coverage in the local press, the podcast of a regional affairs radio show broadcast from the Summit, and a letter from the event co-chairs covering highlights and outcomes of Calumet Summit 2013.
